Courier Mail with it's Knickers Down . . .  5th November 2007 - David Fagan (editor of Murdoch's "Courier Mail"), personally replies to mum & nurse Kim Bax (Beaudesert Shire, Qld), as to why he's NOT covering crucial World (and local), stories on our oil supply, Global finance and Climate.  Expecting a reasoned response?  Kim was too - but it looks like arrogance trumps responsibility at to-day's Courier Mail.  You judge.

To-day's top Courier Mail story 5 Nov 2007:-  "Kylie Minogue World Tour Cancelled - KYLIE Minogue has cancelled her upcoming world tour over fears that it could damage her health. Kylie says the decision was heart-breaking, but was made on doctor's advice."

11 Dec 2007, the Courier Mail's Mike O'Connor also on the spot re his publication's failure to report the news - will Mike ever answer?  Watch this space . . .

A list of international news outlets that DIDN'T censor this crucial new information about our oil supplies:-

UK: "Steep decline in oil production brings risk of war and unrest, says new study"  Output peaked in 2006 and will fall by several a year.  Decline in gas, coal and uranium also predicted - by Ashley Seager, Monday October 22, 2007

Canada: "World oil production is expected to decline sharply by 2030: report"  Mon Oct 22, 2007

UK - "A group of German scientists, the Energy Watch Group, has completed the latest in a crop of studies showing that oil is depleting far faster than previously estimated, and that a global energy crisis is imminent. " Thur Oct 25, 2007

US TV station - "A new energy watch group report says the world has reached the point of maximum oil output. The report suggests production levels will be cut in half by the year 2030. Experts go on to say that the lack of oil output will eventually lead to war and disaster. The report also warns that supplies of coal, uranium and other key fossil fuels are falling. "

"PEAK oil is now", proclaims a hard-hitting study of global resources by the German-based Energy Watch Group." 5 Nov 2007

"Energy questions that will need to be answered" by Peter Elson, Liverpool Daily Post 29 Oct 2007

"THE other week, I joked about the new nature reserve of Wallasea Island being preserved in perpetuity until oil and natural gas is found beneath it. I now discover from a new report that the future lack of fuels could cause consequen- ces far more dire than this.

This survey by German-based Energy Watch Group grimly warns that extreme fossil fuel shortages will lead to wars and social breakdown."

"Declining oil prices are not likely to become the norm in coming decades, according to a research group in Germany. World oil output peaked last year and will decline by more than half by 2030, according to Energy Watch Group, a German network of scientists and members of Parliament." 23 Oct 2007

1.  Kims's email to David Fagan (4 Nov 2007), pointing out a crucial Reuters news story on 30 Oct 2007 (as well as other key Oct 2007 info), on the state of our World oil supplies.    (Note this Reuters story on a crucial announcement by key oil industry insider Sadad al-Husseini was picked up by the Guardian UK on the 9th Nov 2007)

2.  Kim's email to David Fagan (4 Nov 2007), informing him of an update to her blog that includes the above info.

3.  Kim's email to David Fagan (4 Nov 2007), with a raft of appropriate and recent links (for David's convenience), in relation to the above info.

4.  David's reply to Kim (5 Nov 2007), accusing her of being into "Conspiracy theory," and failing to respond to and/or acknowledge the new and recent info Kim is trying to bring to his attention.

5.  Kim's reply to David Fagan (5 Nov 2007), pointing out she's trying to bring new (and very important), information to his attention - and also pointing out she's still waiting for an explanation as to why he's not covering key World finance issues (the new Iranian oil bourse), plus why he didn't cover Guy Pearse's recent key speech on the politics of Climate Change (Sunshine Coast, 27th Oct 2007).

6.  David replies to Kim (5 Nov 2007), asserting, without explanation, that her recent info on World oil supplies, the new Iranian oil bourse (and its implications) and Guy Pearse's recent speech on the politics of Climate Change aren't "Newsworthy."

7.  Kim replies again to David (5 Nov 2007), asserting her complete and scathing disgust at his arrogance and lack of journalistic standards - and also asserting her determination to pursue legitimate answers to legitimate questions.

8.  6th Nov 2007 - For his information, Kim sends David Fagan a news link to "The Press & Journal" (Scotland's oldest daily newspaper), of the 5th Nov 2007, which covers in detail the new information about our global oil supplies that she is trying to bring to his attention, and which he has labelled "Un-newsworthy."

9. 6th Nov 2007 - The info on David Fagan's desk is piling up.  Leading energy investment banker Matt Simmons analyses the new and startling scientific report about our diminishing Global oil supplies (very recently reported in both "The Guardian" UK, and in Scotland's oldest daily paper, "The Press & Journal" - as detailed in point 8 above), which Matt released on the 1st Nov 2007.  And living in hope of a Queensland media that isn't (yet), completely brain dead, I forward this 1st Nov 2007 analysis to David.  Well, with all the info I've given him, at least when T.S.H.T.F., he won't be able to say he "Didn't know."

10. Over two weeks later, Thursday 22nd Nov 2007.  David Fagan's still keeping the lid on the above news at "The Courier Mail," and remains bizarrely silent re his peculiar assertion that it's not "Newsworthy."

From Kim Bax, to David Fagan

Hi again David,

Looking forward to a formal response on my formal questions, but in the meantime I wonder if you realise that oil depletion is an evolving story, that's certainly not "Done and dusted" in one headline?

And I'm genuinely scratching my head as to how and why you think the angle of Bill Nighy's glasses is more important than Sadad al-Husseini's recent comments, as reported on the Reuters news wire (30th Oct 2007):-

"Sadad al-Husseini was a key architect of Saudi Arabian energy production policy for more than a decade whilst a top official at state oil firm Saudi Aramco. He was even more pessimistic, saying world oil production had already plateaued.
"We are already three years into level production," Husseini also told the annual Oil & Money conference, a gathering of top executives."

http://africa.reuters.com/wire/news/usnL30807475.html

. . . Considering T. Boone Pickens is saying the same thing, as is a detailed new report commissioned by the German Government (both items reported, though not in your paper, towards the end of October 2007)?

I believe this was also discussed at the recent ASPO conference in Houston (and T. Boone Pickens was there), a gathering of oil experts from around the Planet.  But I DO understand David, why an earth would your paper report on (or send a correspondent to), such a trivial event when Bill Nighy's glasses are falling off his face, Kirsty Hinze is in town and Tom Cruise has a new film out.  Completely understandable.

Best wishes, Kim         back to the top

2.   "Energy Watch Group" press release, 22nd Oct 2007 (they were sponsored by the German Government, and write that Global oil production peaked in 2006)

(check out page 5).  And here's Simmon's background:-

I also believe he's a member of the Republican Party, and there was a Reuters news item about his analysis as far back as the 26th October 2006 (by Scott Malone).  Here's some background on that (though the Reuters piece has expired):-

And here's some more background on T. Boone Pickens:-

And here's a Guardian (UK), article (22 Oct 2007), about the "Energy Watch Group," and their World oil supply report of the same day:-

Plus here's an extended interview with Chris Skrebowski (editor of the UK "Petroleum Review"), about that "Energy Watch Group" report, 23rd October 2007 (Chris was also interviewed by ABC 4 Corners for their July 2006 edition on Peak Oil):-

And here's pertinent commentary on "The International Petroleum Monthly Report":-

But let's not upset the markets eh David?  Denial at all costs, I worked as a Registered Nurse in a drug and alcohol de-tox unit for over 10 years, and saw it first hand.  It's a force to be reckoned with.  Meanwhile the corporate media spruiks for war with Iran (wonder what the "Energy Return on Energy Invested," EROEI, ratio is on that?)  - whoops sorry, forget EROEI, we've got to maintain the imperial tribute (whoops, forgot again, I meant to type "US dollar reserves to buy oil").

David, I am well aware of the Peak Oil stories that the Courier Mail did.  My perfectly valid point is that this is a constantly evolving story (and to back that up, I've sent you a raft of recent info - including a key Reuters report of the 30th October 2007).  However, the Courier Mail is not reporting on this crucial stuff.

How an earth can you ignore T. Boone Pickens, a German Government report (covered by The Guardian, UK), Matthew Simmons, Sadad al-Husseini (and a 30th Oct Reuters report), Chris Skrebowski and an October 2007 gathering of oil experts from around the Planet?  All of them are saying that Global oil production has already peaked.  Doesn't that count as "News" in the bizarre world of Murdoch journalism?

Further, I'm amazed at your lazy and indifferent response to that raft of info I've just sent.  And if it you continue to ignore it, quite honestly David, it's not me that's nuts (as you've attempted to characterise me by using the term "Conspiracy Theory"), rather it's you that needs to go back to journalism school.

And further still, I'm still awaiting answers on:-

1.  When you'll be covering the implications and history of the new Iranian oil bourse.

2.  When you'll be covering Guy Pearse's recent comments on climate (27th October 2007, Sunshine Coast)

And if I haven't had a decent answer within the next 2 weeks, I'll circulate a reminder to you.  Those questions are perfectly reasonable, and perfectly legitimate.

So David, do you have any reasonable and well thought out explanation as to why:-

- the fact a huge number of global experts are saying Global oil production has already peaked is not "Newsworthy"?

- Guy Pearse's recent incisive comments on climate are not "Newsworthy"?

- the new Iranian oil bourse is not "Newsworthy"?

Your arrogance in not seriously addressing any of the above is beyond belief.  And meanwhile, you're trying to characterise me as "Nuts"?   I think it's you that needs the help, or at least a refresher course in the ethics of journalism.  Is this the ultimate picture of the Murdoch news empire with its "Knickers down"?

Good morning again David,

Re:- "Press & Journal" article of the 5th Nov 2007

Just some brief info that may be of interest.  As you know, I've tried to bring this recent information (Oct 2007), about our Global oil to your attention without success:-

. . . And a key component of that raft of information was this new report (22nd Oct 2007), commissioned by the German Government.

I also included (for your convenience), the extended commentary of Chris Skrebowski (editor of the UK "Petroleum Review"), in regard to that news:-

However, as (I gather), you don't regard that report as "Newsworthy,"  I thought it may be of interest to you that Scotland's oldest daily newspaper, "The Press & Journal," believes otherwise.  You may want to check out their extended article of yesterday (5th Nov 2007):-

"PEAK oil is now", proclaims a hard-hitting study of global resources by the German-based Energy Watch Group.

Its predictions are dire: global oil output peaked in 2006 at 81million barrels per day, will slide to 58million bpd by 2020 and 39million bpd by 2030.

And here's some background on "The Press & Journal"

Very best wishes, Kim

From Mrs. Kim Bax, to David Fagan

Goodmorning again David,

Re: Leading Oil Investment Banker/1 Nov 2007 report

As you know, both "The Guardian" (UK), and "The Press & Mail" (Scotland's oldest daily newspaper), have both very recently reported on the stunning findings of the German based "Energy Watch Group," in relation to Global oil supplies, though you have dismissed their work as not "Newsworthy."  And hopefully, you will be able to provide an explanation of that decision in due course.

In the meantime, I can but provide you with more pertinent information.  Here's a new, comprehensive analysis of the "Energy Watch Group" report, by leading energy banker Matt Simmons (1st November 2007):-

I believe I've already provided you with Matt Simmon's paper from the ASPO conference in Houston (Oct 2007):-

And with comprehensive background on Matt Simmons:-

And further, Matt Simmons new analysis joins the one recently given by Chris Skrebowski (editor of the UK "Petroleum Review"), which you already have (courtesy of myself).

And coincidentally, professional writer and journalist James Howard Kunstler wrote some very pertinent comments about the media and oil depletion on the 5th Nov 2007 (the same day you dismissed my concerns via email).  I've added them to my blog (right hand column):-

It's also interesting to note Kunstler got an honourable mention in the recent Queensland Government report on the subject. Obviously I'm not the only admirer of his pithy, direct style.

Very best wishes, Kim         back to the top

Subject: To David Fagan, from Kim Bax

Hullo again David,

You may remember your bizarre email to me of the 5th November 2007, in which you inexplicably asserted that key, recently released news about the condition of World oil supplies was not "Newsworthy."

Your comments related to an extensive, newly released report (sponsored by the German Government), which was covered by major news outlets around the World, and backed up by one of the World's richest and most experienced oilmen, T. Boone Pickens - as well as by the CEO of the World's largest energy investment bank, Matt Simmons (CEO of Simmons & Co).  And to add to that, Sadad al-Husseini, who for many years, (until 2005), presided over the largest reserves in the World (as head of exploration and production for Saudi Aramco), now says Saudi oil production has peaked (as reported by Reuters 30th October 2007).

And all I've had from you since that rather peculiar assertion of 5th November 2007 is complete silence, not a shred of explanation.

So, David, do you have a rational explanation?  Or do I just have to keep reminding you (and everyone else), every couple of weeks or so (in view of your silence), that the Murdoch press is blatantly and shamelessly refusing to report key aspects of the news?

Regards, Kim

PS - and by not reporting on this key news, you're not controlling the flow of information, you're merely making your news organisation look incompetent at best, and corrupt at worst - because networks are just as powerful as hierarchial news organisations when in comes to disseminating information (if not more so).  Obviously, you (and Murdoch), no longer care about retaining credibility and legitimacy - either that, or you're too ingrained in your old habits to realise it's being seriously undermined.

11 Dec 2007, the Courier Mail's Mike O'Connor also on the spot re his publication's failure to report the news - will Mike ever answer?  Watch this space . . .    back to the top

Date: 11/12/2007 1:28:56 AM

From: Mrs. Kim Bax, Cedar Vale, Beaudesert Shire, Qld

To: Mike O'Connor, journalist, The Courier Mail & cc list below (& especially Brisbane City Councillor Helen Abrahams)

Hi Mike,

I saw you wrote these lines yesterday (Mon 10th Dec 2007):-

"It is an inconvenient truth for the State Government that it has comprehensively failed to provide the infrastructure necessary for Brisbane."

. . . And I believe you were writing about roads, as the article was called "Political Gridlock."

Yuck.  Sorry Mike, but hypocrisy (especially journalistic), has that effect on me.  Though maybe I'm wrong?  Maybe you're the one journalist at the Courier Mail who has the guts and integrity to answer my outstanding question.  But let me digress briefly.

I'm a Registered Nurse, accountable to a set of professional standards and ethics.  And right now (in my opinion), if I did my job like you're doing yours, my patients would die like flies.

So Mike, on behalf of your publication, and in defence of your own ethical standards (and your right to pejoratively target others with the term "Inconvenient truth"), could you explain why your editor David Fagan labelled a major German Government report (released end of October 2007), that says World oil production peaked last year, and we're hurtling towards a massive 32% drop by 2020, as not "Newsworthy"?  Considering T. Boone Pickens and Matthew Simmons publicly agreed at the same time?  With the latter just releasing his own latest report?  (A simple google search will reveal their standing and authority if you take the time).

I've emailed David Fagan several times since, asking for an explanation of his blunt, throwaway statement, but he's chosen to ignore me.  No worries though, I'll just keep on asking.

And for your information, here's a record of our emails, and the monumental news (reported in other major media outlets around the World at the time), that seems a bit too "Inconvenient" for David:-

So Mike, as one professional to another, do you have a set of standards that informs your practise?  Do you have an explanation of "Newsworthiness" for me?  And do you think the "Inconvenient truths" (at least, I assume they're "Inconvenient"), in the October 2007 report of The Energy Watch Group are relevant to your article on transport, "Political Gridlock"?

Or, like Campbell Newman, do you think it's all irrelevant, and maybe share his touching, Boys Own faith in woodchips?

And if you think I'm a wet blanket for getting in the way of exponential SUV sales and your untrammeled motoring rights, maybe you might want to take time out to explore the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and EROEI (energy return on energy invested) - something Campbell's obviously not bothered to do.  And any of Richard Heinberg's books (just scroll down):-

. . . Should give you a clear-sighted view into the basic laws and boundaries of our Universe (vis a vis "Other" energy).

So Mike (to sum up), excuse me if I ask someone to pass the barf bag next time I see a similarly un-informed souffle of an article like yours in The Courier Mail.  There's no excuse.

Quote from James Howard Kunstler, 5 Nov 2007 - "There is really no excuse for The New York Times and the rest of the mainstream news media to not understand what is going on out there. The pervasive cluelessness is a symptom of another complex system out of whack — the system that informs us what's going on. Meanwhile, the danger mounts. The heating season is underway and the furnaces are clanking. Many Americans will have to start choosing whether to pay their mortgage, fill the tank of the Chevy Suburban, buy that brick of Velveeta, or pay the heating oil guy. It looks like China will be spending more of its accumulated dollars bidding up the price of oil (or making favorable contracts with foreign suppliers) instead of buying Freddie Mac bonds. The USA could not find itself in a less favorable position among all these forces roiling the scene. It certainly can't afford to continue its pathetic pose of cluelessness."  - James is the Author of The Long Emergency, and he was given an honourable mention in the recently released Queensland Government report on our vulnerability to oil depletion

Scotland the Brave - Telling it like it is.  Headline from Scotland's oldest daily newspaper, 5 Nov 2007 SIMMONS SPELLS IT OUT - BUT WHEN WILL THE OSTRICHES GET THEIR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND? - When indeed?  Considering Kim Bax sent David Fagan  Matt Simmons very latest report (1 Nov 2007), on the dire state of World oil supplies on the 6th Nov 2007?
